    Friends of Minet Library (Administrator)

After the focused activity last month, it may have seemed a little quieter in the past fortnight but there is still a lot going on.  Here is a quick update.

The Council has built a wall between the Archives and lending library and, after a two-week closure,  has now re-opened the Archives.  They have two full time security guards on site, 24 hours a day.  Only the security guards have keys to the building so they have to let everyone in and out, including library staff apparently. It's been estimated that this is costing the Council about £10,000 a week for security at Carnegie and Minet.  What a complete and senseless waste of taxpayers' money.

Nevertheless, the fight goes on and activity of the Friends group include:

    • A judicial review, which is still underway
    • We have applied to make the Library an Asset of Community Value. The Council ignored our initial request (30 September 2015) so we represented it in hard copy to Lib Peck (Council Leader) on 24 March, emailing it at the same time to the Head of Asset Strategy at the Council.  We've had acknowledgement that they've received it but nothing more
    • Keeping up the pressure to GLL - keep writing please to Managing Director MarkSesnan@gll.org or customerservices@gll.org or pressenquiries@gll.org
    • Fortnightly gardening sessions outside the archive in our new raised beds - perhaps we could make the beds read Defend the 10? We would like to make these regular events, perhaps with cake, music, banner making, children's tea parties, talks, monthly reminiscence sessions and handing out posters so we keep a visible presence at Minet
    • We would like to print and distribute posters so that we can have these up in windows all over the area; houses, cars etc.
    • We need banners up around the neighbourhood - preferably on main throughfares, and near councillors' homes!
    • We're talking to Florence and the Machine about a fundraising concert - she wants to help but is very busy
    • We will be writing to Lambeth to question the brief for the feasibility study
    • We will put in an application to HLF for a Start Up grant - this will prepare our group to apply for funding for the archive. We've also been speaking to HLF telling them that we want to keep the archive and asking for any help they can give
    • In addition to posting information on the Minet website, twitter and facebook pages, we also share information about Defend the 10 action with the more than 40 organisations involved with the Vassall and Coldharbour Forum
    • We continue to attend conferences and meetings to represent Defend the 10 e.g. the Brixton Exchange 2 exploring Brixton's heritage and ways we can resist land grab by developers (including libraries). This week there's a conference on Thursday by Just Space which is lobbying for a Community Led Plan for London. It seems important to be strategic and join up with as many other groups lobbying to protect our communities as possible.

We need all the active and visible support we can get so if you can help in anyway, please let us know.  Email: Friends@minet.org.uk
